We Were Liars by E.Lockhart book review

I decided it was about time I take a break from fantasy books and show a bit of love to my contemporary ones. I wanted something that is easy to read, but also makes me think and the first book that popped into my mind was We Were Liars by E.Lockhart. I read only good things about it and everyone was saying how amazing the plot twist was, so I had high hopes for it.

The book certainly did not disappoint; it was an easy read and I finished it in a couple of hours. You might think that this is another typical YA book, but some things make it unique. For instance, the book starts with a family tree and a map. The main character, Cadence, uses fairy tales to describe real situations. The writing is charming and poetic, quite different to what I expected.

Cadence Sinclair is the first grandchild of Harris Sinclair and daughter of Penny, his youngest child. The Sinclairs are a privileged family and beautiful family, but rotten on the inside. It`s a patriarchy, where Harris controls every move and everyone has to obey him. When she falls in love with the wrong person, Cadence starts to see how broken her family is and decides to take action. The ending is mind blowing and tragic, it will totally mess with your brain. However, there are subtle hints throughout the book, so for some, it won`t be that shocking.

The characters are a bit flat, but their portrayal is realistic. Despite their effort to look like the perfect family, the Sinclairs are a mess. Harris loves power and not only does he control his family, but he instigates the family members again one another. His daughters don`t have sustainable jobs; their marriages are a failure and they drink too much. The ones that might break the vicious circle are the kids, but is youth and ambition enough?

I gave this book 4.5 out of 5 stars; I enjoyed the story a lot and even hours after reading it, I was still thinking about it. If you have not read this yet, definitely put it on your summer TBR.
